This 1938 work by Slovak modernist Mikuláš Galanda, Crying Woman (Plačúca žena), is intensely abstract: the female figure twists into flowing waves, hair raging like a storm, black lines carving a torn face—hollow eyes, mouth stretched in silent scream. Her hands reach from above, cradling massive crimson cloths or handkerchiefs, tears dripping as blood-red spots, as if bleeding from the soul. Red dominates, symbolizing raw trauma and passion; grief is ritualized, held up so it won’t spill uselessly into the void. Rough lines and stark contrasts evoke a pre-apocalyptic hush, turning personal anguish into an eternal, undulating lament.
